Nuclear power plants use nuclear fuel, usually uranium, to produce energy and power a nuclear reactor. A neutron is usually released to strike the atom to let it undergoes nuclear fission. Although there are other technologies generating energy, fossil fuel and nuclear fuel still provide most of the energy that we use in everyday life. However, use of nuclear fuel remained controversial due to its various pros and cons. We are going to talk about some of these pros and cons in this post.
Pros:
-produce vast amount of energy with little amount of source (efficiency)
-release less greenhouse gases compare to fossil fuel
-high reliability of power production (constant)
Cons:
-safety threats (security)
-waste management of radioactive materials
-high costs
Something really interesting about nuclear power is that meltdowns of nuclear power plant station have not yet cause any direct results, and the total number of death expectation is quite low. However, radio will cause genetic mutation and influence later generations.
My questions about nuclear power include: do workers in nuclear power plant station usually have health insurance that provided by the company? What is the average life expectancy of those workers? Where else has nuclear fuel been used other than power plants?
